Who is Tobin Smith?
To the general public, Tobin Smith is perhaps best known for the 14 years he spent on Fox News and Fox Business as an analyst and as host of Bulls and Bears.
When it comes to investing, Tobin has demonstrated a knack for understanding what’s really happening in the market and predicting the “next big things.” His accurate top/bottom calls during the dot com bubble burst and housing market collapse “made and saved his subscribers billions.”
Steve Jobs himself once went on record celebrating Tobin’s prescient recognition of how the iPod and iPhone would transform the world.
And the investors who bought Apple stock when Tobin recommended it at 42 cents a share are probably celebrating him as well…from the decks of their yachts.
Tobin founded the successful investment publications Garazeilli Report and Change Wave Research. He is also the New York Times bestselling author of: ChangeWave Investing, ChangeWave Investing 2.0, Billion Dollar Green: Profit from the Eco Revolution, and Foxocracy: Inside the Network’s Playbook of Tribal Warfare.
What is Transformity Investor?
In development for the last two years, Transformity Investor will be Tobin Smith’s “most advanced research service to date” when it formally launches in May of 2023.
Filled with Tobin’s “cutting edge research,” this monthly newsletter will navigate its readers through the “transformative events” that seem to rock our world daily.
Transformity Investor will specialize in not only helping investors protect their portfolios from global upheavals like the emerging banking crisis, but in finding ways to use that chaos as a stepping stone to potentially life-changing profits.
Tobin Smith and his team work from a simple philosophy:
“…transformative market events don’t just create wealthy investors – they mint millionaires.”
What the Heck Happened with Silicon Valley Bank?
Although Transformity Investor is still a few months away from officially going live, Tobin Smith decided that the craziness taking hold in the banking industry needed to be addressed immediately.
To that end, Tobin just released a special Banking Crisis Emergency Webinar to break down the situation for his future subscribers.
So what exactly caused the demise of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB)?
The way Tobin lays it out, SVB’s demise came about due to two major factors.
First, similar to the banks that collapsed during the 1980’s S&L Crisis, SVB was simply over-leveraged, having invested too heavily in fixed-rate mortgages. So when the Fed increased interest rates, the value of SVB’s assets plummeted.
Second, as Tobin describes it, “banking is a fancy term for being in the confidence business.”
And when people lose confidence in their bank, “heads are going to be rolling.”
Tobin refers to the SVB collapse as “the first Twitter-led bank panic.” When the venture capital firms caught wind of SVB’s weakness, they all jumped on Twitter and warned everyone to “run not walk” away from SVB.
One “mind-boggling” fact is that KPMG, the world’s third biggest accounting firm, gave SVB a clean bill of health less than a month before they collapsed.
How could that have happened?
Tobin believes this is because the “junior” accountants they have auditing these firms have no experience working during a “high rate cycle.”
And why would they? Interest rates have been low for almost 15 years.
So, although a bank may appear solvent at first glance, anyone familiar with this situation can recognize that even a small Fed rate increase can cause a bank’s assets to go up in smoke overnight.
The real question people are asking right now is how will this crisis affect the banking industry as a whole?
Are Bank Failures Contagious?
To put it bluntly…yes.
According to Tobin Smith, SVB may be the first social media-driven bank run, but it definitely won’t be the last.
Especially when you consider the fact that almost all account holders now have banking apps on their phones. If they hear the slightest whisper of a rumor that their bank will fail they can wire money out of their accounts in seconds.
On the bright side of things, the Federal Government did act quickly and decisively to stem the bleeding from SVB.
The FDIC wisely decided to step-in and cover not only accounts valued at $250,000 or less, but all SVB accounts regardless of size.
While different in many ways from the collapse of 2008, Tobin notes that this is still basically just a bailout. Only this time it’s centered in the venture capital sector.
The FDIC’s actions have prevented other dominoes from falling, at least for now.
The stock prices of any banks that looked remotely similar to SVB “got crushed…and some of those will not survive.”
A “manic sell-off” of banking stocks is already in full swing.
Given his special focus on “transformative events” just like this, Tobin Smith has stepped-up to offer a few strategies to guide his future readers through the crisis until Transformity Investor is fully up and running.
Profit Even if the Crisis Spreads
Similar to what happened in 2008, Tobin expects there will be some winners emerging from the turbulence. And grabbing a piece of these likely winners now, when times look grim, could result in some serious gains.
J.P. Morgan and many of the other major banks are already luring customers away from their smaller, less-stable competition. Tobin points out that all banks with assets greater than $250 billion are considered “too big to fail.”
So don’t bet on them failing.
Another point that Tobin stresses is that the Fed won’t allow huge firms like J.P. Morgan to just straight-up buy smaller banks. This is to prevent additional concentration of the banking industry into the hands of the top players.
So, the smaller banks that fail as a result of the crisis will most likely be acquired by conservatively-managed, “super regional banks.”
Tobin refers to super regional banks as the “workhorse” of the American economy.
His analysis indicates that many of these banks are fundamentally strong firms that have been unfairly crushed by the crazed sell-off roiling the financial sector.
In other words, Tobin expects these guys to bounce back big time.
Also caught up in the madness of the hour, several well-financed, highly liquid brokerage firms.
Here’s just a partial list of some of the companies that Tobin is recommending his followers take a serious look at:
- PNC Financial Services Group Inc (PNC)
- Interactive Brokers LLC (IBKR)
- Truist Financial Corp (TFC)
- Charles Schwab (SCHW)
- Annaly Capital Management Inc. (NLY)
Of course, do your own research and watch Tobin’s webinar for the full breakdowns.
